WITHOUT MERIT

Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing a mistake deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines, when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

Poignant and powerful, WITHOUT MERIT explores the layers of lies that tie a family together and the power of love.

5 Star Review

I don't think I've ever read a Colleen Hoover book and been anything but impressed and in such a book hangover. I kid you not, this woman writes some of the best books I have ever read in my entire life. And guys, Without Merit was just that yet again! Mind blown.

Without Merit follows Merit Voss and her struggle through adolescence and a life that everything just isn't what it seems. Merit is an odd one, let me tell ya. She does things that normal people would deem weird. Like collecting trophies. She has no rhyme or reason for the ones she gets but man does that girl have a lot of trophies.

Merit has such an odd family life as well. I think a majority of her personal issues stresses from that. She has always felt like the outsider looking in with her family, especially with her twin sister. The hostility that you could feel between those two was raw. Add in Sagan, another person who has Merit's emotions running a mile a minute, feeling and seeing things she shouldn't be feeling.

Without Merit may be a little younger of an age then we have seen Colleen write lately but in no way did it diminish the content. Without Merit still touched on some very real and very raw emotion and dilemmas. At no point did you know what Merit was going to say or do next. She needed to find herself and she had a lot to learn in life before she could do that.

Powerful and poignant, Colleen Hoover has done it again with Without Merit. If you pick up one book anytime soon, let Merit and the Voss family take you on a trip you'll surely never forget.
